I am Abraham Leeds. Great grandson to Japhet Leeds. My great grandmother, Deborah, gave birth to the Leeds Devil. Now known as the Jersey Devil. Such is the way of myths, I suppose. True, my ill great grandmother birthed a creature. But it had nothing to do with a witch or a curse. Nor, the Devil himself. My great grandfather was a scientist of sorts, you see. Perhaps not the greatest, but he did his fair share in researching the smallpox vaccine.
He was also a madman.
There is not much known, by and large, about Japhet Leeds, and that was exactly how he wished it to be. Same with my grandfather, Daniel, and my own father. They didnât care much for great grandfatherâs work anyway.
And so, before Great Grandfatherâs death, he handed me the keys to this laboratory where I read his own secret journal. I was only eight at the time. The Leeds Devil wasnât anything supernatural, but rather the result of a serum Japhet injected into Great Grandmother the very day she knew she was pregnant with her thirteenth child.
Why he did it, I do not know. The reason is never fully explained through the journals except for the notion of a superior species. If he planned on such, he failed. Though the devils he helped create were fine killing machines in their own right. Baby snatchers, the whole lot. Vile and ravenous. Perhaps they might make a good addition to the war. Perhaps not.
Regardless, I promised Great Grandfather I would expand his research. Only I alone could be trusted, he claimed. And with such conviction. I alone could bring forth the finest generation of devil. The creatures he so affectionately called, âMy babiesâ. Indeed, he created them, and Great Grandmother wasnât the first to fall victim to his genetic meddling. There were many mothers throughout the region who bedded with him and he injected. Many who birthed their own devil, though their stories were never brought to light and each failed devil was dispatched, as far as I know.
Like I said, Great Grandfather was a madman.
He had a much larger plan, however. One which might change humanity as we know it. A plan to breed the devils using what he consistently referred to in his final journal as the, âreal motherâ. He passed before accomplishing this goal and, on his deathbed, urged me to pursue the possibility.
